Urban Meyer Should Move Braxton Miller To Wide Receiver For Ohio State Buckeyes

With news that Braxton Miller will be returning to Ohio State, the Buckeyes are about to enter into one of the wildest quarterback competitions in college football history.

Miller is returning from a shoulder injury that cost him the entire 2014 season. His replacement J.T. Barrett was a Heisman Trophy candidate, as he threw for 2,834 yards, 938 yards rushing and 34 touchdowns, leading the Buckeyes to an 11-1 record before missing the last three games of the season due to a fractured ankle. Lastly, all Cardale Jones did was lead the Buckeyes to victory in the last three games of the season, including the National Championship Game against Oregon.

On the one hand, having three quarterbacks this talented is a great problem to have for head coach Urban Meyer. He can’t make a wrong decision, and all three guys are capable of guiding the Buckeyes back to the 2016 National Championship Game.

On the other hand, the situation has the potential for disaster. All three guys are extremely competitive, and have performed admirably at the highest level. Although each player may show support for his teammates, there’s going to be some disappointment that could lead to a divisive locker room atmosphere.

The solution is sitting right there in front of Meyer. Miller and Barrett have extreme athleticism with the ball in their hands, while Jones is a prototypical quarterback, with a cannon for an arm, and the ability to use his big frame to add a little power to the run game. Jones likely would’ve been a first-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft had he entered, based solely on the talent in his arm, and the poise he showed to lead his team to the National Title.

With Miller and Barrett’s pro prospects likely being at a skill position, Meyer should move both guys to either wide receiver or running back, and give Jones more weapons to target. It’s the best way to keep all three guys happy, and make the offense that much more explosive, while giving Miller and Barrett experience at positions they will have to eventually move to in the NFL.

It’s a bit unorthodox, but it’s a perfect solution. Even if this type of move isn’t in Meyer’s plans, Jones should be the Buckeyes’ starting quarterback on September 7 at Virginia Tech. While Miller and Barrett fit Meyer’s scheme slightly better than Jones due to their ability to run the football, Jones’ arm talent gives the Buckeyes a multi-faceted offense. The team already has Heisman Trophy preseason favorite Ezekiel Elliott toting the rock in the backfield, and there’s no need to put another quarterback in harm’s way by calling quarterback runs with a stud like Elliott spearheading the Buckeyes’ rushing attack.
