Alabama Enters Uncharted Territory As Underdogs In SEC

Following a 2014 season when the Alabama Crimson Tide won the SEC Title and played in the first ever College Football playoff, the team enters 2015 with plenty of uncertainty floating in the air. In fact, the Crimson Tide have been voted to finish fourth in the SEC after the team only returns three starters on offense from last season. With so much inexperience set to play significant roles, the Crimson Tide will likely be an 8-4-type team in 2015.

At quarterback, Jake Coker would seem to be the favorite to land the starting job. He was also the favorite last season after transferring from Florida State, but he was beat out in the preseason by Blake Sims. Coker is blessed with great arm talent, but he hasn’t accepted the leadership role that goes with being the starting quarterback. If he can’t prove himself to Nick Saban this season, then he will end up on the list of quarterbacks who never maximized their potential.

The Crimson Tide will lean heavily on the running game in 2015, with potential Heisman Trophy candidate Derrick Henry leading the way, and Kenyan Drake giving the backfield a change-of-pace, the team should be one of the top rushing offenses in the nation.

If Coker wins the starting quarterback job, he’s going to have a glut of inexperienced receivers to target. Gone are Amari Cooper, DeAndrew White, and Christion Jones, who were the go-to guys for Sims in 2014. Coker’s top returning targets are junior receiver Chris Black and junior tight end O.J. Howard, which is a big reason why the Crimson Tide will look to lean on the running game as much as possible.

Defensively, the Crimson Tide should have one of the best units in the nation. Loaded with five-star recruits across the board, the defense returns seven starters from 2014. The only issue with the defense is the spread offenses that have overtaken the SEC. Saban has stated on numerous occasions that he’s not a fan of the hurry-up spread offenses, and it shows, as the defense gave up 44 points to the Auburn Tigers in 2014, and 42 points to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the first-round of the College Football Playoff.

The Crimson Tide are used to entering every season as the odds-on favorites to win the SEC, but this season, they are the underdogs. While Saban is one of the greatest motivators in all of college football, it will be hard for him to win with so much inexperience on both sides of the ball. Replacing 12 starters is a daunting task, and the mountain will be too tall to climb for the Crimson Tide. Best-case scenario, the team wins nine games in 2015, while worst-case the Crimson Tide finish 6-6, as they have to toughest schedule in the entire country. I believe the Crimson Tide will lose at Georgia, at Texas A&M, at Mississippi State, and at Auburn and finish 2015 with an 8-4 record.
