TV Schedule: Saturday, Sept. 5, 7:30 p.m. ET, NBC

Stadium: Notre Dame Stadium

Line: Notre Dame (-9.5)

The Texas Longhorns and Notre Dame Fighting Irish will battle it out in the very first week of the 2015 college football season. In the past, this would be one of the biggest games of the year … but that isn’t necessarily the case now.

Both teams have seen more glory in the past, and both teams are trying to get back into the national spotlight.

That said, Notre Dame does rock a number next to its name (aka it is ranked in the top 25), and it even made the national championship a few years back. However, the Fighting Irish lost four games in a row at one point last season.

Notre Dame did win its bowl game against the LSU Tigers — and that is big time.

Everett Golson is no longer the starting QB — you may have heard — and it is now up to Malik Zaire to lead the team back to the promised land.

Handing the ball over to Texas, the Longhorns need a big year. Unfortunately, not much is expected out of them when it comes to making some noise, but a lot is still expected out of head coach Charlie Strong. It doesn’t help Texas’ cause that it plays in the mighty Big 12, where teams like TCU and Baylor will be talented enough to make a case for the College Football Playoff.

Both teams are coming off disappointing seasons, but it is Notre Dame who should return back to the spotlight … or at the very least stay in the top 25 throughout the year. With environment and home-field advantage being so huge at the college level, it’s a no-brainer to go with Notre Dame.

For Texas and Strong’s sake, hopefully QB Tyrone Swoopes shows some promise because the veteran is going to have to play like one if the Longhorns are going to take a step forward this year.

PREDICTION: Longhorns 17, Fighting Irish 35
