Disappointing Season Continues for Arizona LB Scooby Wright

Last season, Scooby Wright did it all. The middle linebacker for the Arizona Wildcats led the nation in tackles, tackles for loss, and forced fumbles as he swept up just about every defensive award during his sophomore season. 2015 was supposed to be more of the same but the only thing Wright can’t seem to do this season is stay healthy. After working his way back from a knee injury suffered in the season opener, Arizona will once again be without their star linebacker after Wright suffered a sprained right foot in his return to the field last week against the UCLA Bruins.

Wright is a major piece of an Arizona defense that struggled to break into the middle of the pack in the conference last season. His 11.64 tackles per game and 2.07 tackles for loss averages paced the Wildcats defense and they still finished No. 10 in the Pac-12 in total defense. While his return to the field didn’t make a significant impact for Arizona last week against UCLA when the Bruins blew the doors off Tucson in a 56-30 blowout, his absence for another extended period will only diminish their overall talent level and make it more difficult for the Arizona defense to hold up in conference play.

His absence will be particularly felt this weekend when Arizona goes on the road to take on the No. 18 Stanford Cardinal in Palo Alto. Last week, the Cardinal rushing attack came alive running for 325 yards and four touchdowns while averaging 6.77 yards per carry against the Oregon State Beavers. You can bet that Stanford is going to be looking to utilize the same attack this week and without Wright in the middle, Arizona is going to be susceptible to getting run over.

After his breakout 2014 season, expectations were sky-high for Scooby Wright this fall. But after suffering another injury that will sideline him for multiple games, 2015 is turning into a major disappointment for Wright and the Arizona defense.
