Auburn Tigers head coach Guz Malzahn announced yesterday he has dismissed senior WR Duke Williams.

Malzahn said:

“Last night I dismissed Duke Williams from our team,” Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said during his media availability on Tuesday. “I gave him a chance to prove himself, and I’m disappointed it didn’t work out. Our team will be fine. We will move on.”

Malzahn added that Williams will not remain enrolled in the school, and expressed regret, but content with his decision:

“Any time you have to make a tough call and dismiss a player, it’s not easy,” Malzahn said Tuesday. “At the same time, this is a team sport, and you’re always going to think about the team first. You give people chances, you give opportunities for people to prove themselves, and the bottom line [is they] didn’t. It’s not easy, and it shouldn’t be easy for a coach, but you’ve got to do what’s best for your team.”

According to AL.com, Williams and some friends were kicked out of the ‘Skybar’ for wearing sunglasses inside the establishment. In the process of trying to make a return into the building, Williams allegedly punched two security guards, a bartender assistant and another unidentified person.

Williams had a highly-publicized track record of problems during his tenure with the university, so this can’t be an incredibly shocking development. We can only hope losing his college football scholarship and career will help Williams to get on a straightened path.
