Al Golden’s Coaching is Not the Biggest Problem For Miami Football

The small aircraft economy in Florida’s biggest city must be booming judging from the number of flights that are taking off from a small airport in Dade County and Miami head coach Al Golden is the reason for it.

Every Saturday and some Thursdays when the team plays, a flight has taken off with some sort of streamer attached to the rear of the plane with a slogan saying, in so many words, “fire Al Golden.” Not a single person has hired a plane to deliver a message about the real problem with the Hurricanes, and it is unreasonable expectations on the part of their fans. One of the banners said “Temple coach=Temple results”’ and another said “Fire Al Golden Already; These Banners Are Getting Expensive.”

Someone should hire a banner that says: “Someone please tell Miami fans it is not 1986 anymore.”

Miami fans should be thanking Golden, not writing condemnations from the clouds. Golden was parachuted into a firestorm at Miami, taking over just before one of the biggest scandals in college football took place that resulted in a bowl ban and loss of scholarships. Golden had every right to go looking for another opportunity in the wake of being misled by the administration but he did not. Instead, he fashioned three of the top-four recruiting classes the team had this decade, and his 2012 class was ranked No. 5 in the nation by one scouting service.

Had Golden entertained other offers early in his tenure, he would have been well within his rights to leave the program for someone else to fix. Instead, he is doing his level best to fix it, and frankly it is hard to imagine that the Hurricanes could have attracted a better coach given his circumstances.

Miami fans should know by now that winning is the result of hard work and not their birthright, and they have no one working harder than Golden. They should be careful what they wish for because the next guy could be much worse.
