Baylor Football Still Hasn’t Proven Contender Status Despite Blowing Out Kansas

Sure, the No. 3 Baylor Bears are sitting pretty after another blowout win over the Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday. Still, despite the 66-7 demolition of their Big 12 foes, there’s little reason to think Baylor has proven itself to be a true contender at this point in the season.

Some will point to the fact that the Bears have outscored opponents 321-111 on their way to a 5-0 record. However, when taking a close look at their opposition, the level of talent is far from impressive.

So far this season, the teams they’ve beaten so far boast a cumulative record of 8-17. One of those teams is a FCS program (Lamar), and Kansas was winless coming into Saturday. The only quality opponent on the Bears’ schedule so far has been Texas Tech, who annually boast a porous defense and enjoy getting into shootouts (Baylor won 63-35).

The other wins came against Rice (2-3 coming into Saturday) and SMU (1-5). Impressive? Not really.

That’s not to say the Bears aren’t a quality team capable of making the 2015 College Football Playoff, but they haven’t yet proven themselves against a top-tier team. So before you Baylor fans go buying tickets to the National Championship Game, you might want to take a step back.

The Bears still have their toughest slate of games yet to come. The next three weeks will pit them against solid Big 12 opponents, including West Virginia, Iowa State and Kansas State. The real test, however, comes in the second half of November.

In three weeks’ time, Baylor will take on No. 10 Oklahoma (who lost to Texas on Saturday), No. 21 Oklahoma State and No. 2 TCU. They then cap off the season against the Longhorns, who always pose a threat despite their embarrassing amount of inconsistency.

I’m not saying to throw in the towel on Baylor – I’m just saying to temper expectations. It’s still early in the season, and the Bears haven’t been seriously tested up to this point. We’ll see how Seth Russell and Co. fare against the middle-of-the-pack Big 12 teams before they face the true challenge of three grueling matchups against the conference’s top competition.

It’s certainly been a promising start to the 2015 campaign for Baylor, but there’s still a long way to go before we can consider them contenders. For now, I’d hold off on booking your trip to Glendale, AZ.
