Maryland Football Rumors: Randy Edsall Could Be Fired After Loss to Ohio State

When Randy Edsall accepted the offer to become the head coach at the University of Maryland, he referred to it as his “dream job.” Following a 49-28 loss at the hands of the Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday, it sounds as if Edsall is about to be relieved of his duties.

At his press conference after the game, Edsall was asked about his job security:

A report came out on Thursday saying Edsall would not be returning as head coach of the Terrapins in 2016, but after today’s loss, it sounds as if he could be out of a job before the end of the weekend. Edsall’s career record at Maryland now sits at 22-34 despite having an abundance of recruiting resources at his disposal and gobs of cash for his program from the support of Under Armour. The university expects its football team to be successful and now in his fifth season, Edsall has never posted a record better than 7-6.

In 2015, the Terrapins are now 2-4 and have been outscored in the last three contests by a combined score of 122-34. Edsall’s two wins have come over Richmond and South Florida, while the team has been defeated by Bowling Green, West Virginia, Michigan and Ohio State.

If Edsall does end up getting canned this weekend, it’s unclear who would take over as interim head coach. Offensive coordinator Mike Locksley has prior head coaching experience at New Mexico, but he went a combined 2-26 during three seasons with the Lobos. Defensive coordinator Keith Dudzinski has been with the Terrapins since 2012, but this is his first season as a coordinator. He has no prior head coaching experience.

With the move to the Big Ten, the Terrapins have been overwhelmed on the football field. Athletic director Kevin Anderson has pressure on his shoulders to produce a winner at Maryland and Edsall clearly isn’t the guy to take the team where it needs to go.
