After entering the 2015 season as one of the favorites in the Pac 12, the USC Trojans have severely underachieved. Following a 17-12 loss at home last Thursday night to the Washington Huskies, the Trojans’ record now sits at 3-2. There have been rumors swirling that head coach Steve Sarkisian could be fired, and apparently he’s taking it extremely hard.

According to reports, Sarkisian was sent home by USC athletic director Pat Haden on Sunday after showing up to practice “not healthy.” Following practice, Haden announced that he has ordered Sarkisian to take an indefinite leave of absence in order to get the treatment that he needs, and that Clay Helton will be the team’s interim coach.

Although it’s unclear if Sarkisian will be allowed to return once he’s completed his “treatment,” I applaud USC for not just cutting ties. Allowing him to seek treatment will allow Sarkisian to deal with his addiction and hopefully get his life back on track. Had Haden fired his head coach, there’s no telling what kind of downward spiral that would’ve sent Sarkisian into.
