Former Arizona State and Arizona Cardinals safety Pat Tillman was killed by friendly fire on April 22, 2004 in Afghanistan. Following the events of September 11, 2001, Tillman turned down a contract offer from the Cardinals the following season and enlisted in the U.S. Army. It was that type of patriotism that made Tillman such a great man.

As a way to honor their fallen hero, the Arizona State Sun Devils have announced that they will be donning special jerseys for tonight’s game against the Oregon Ducks. Every jersey will have Tillman’s name sewn across the back.

Thursday night is the Sun Devils’ “Salute to Service” game and the team will be wearing throwback uniforms from the mid-1990s when Tillman started at linebacker for Arizona State.

The Sun Devils enter the stadium through ‘Tillman tunnel’ and wear a patch on their uniforms honoring Tillman.
