The Notre Dame Fighting Irish did the only thing that matters this time of year — survived and advanced.

On a weekend that was expected to be very telling when it comes to the College Football Playoff picture, Notre Dame did exactly what it was supposed to do. Although it didn’t blow out the Boston College Eagles by any stretch of the imagination, it will now enter its last game of the regular season with just one loss.

What does that mean, one might ask? Well, it simply means this: If the Fighting Irish knock off the Stanford Cardinal in their last clash, they should make the College Football Playoff.

After all, Notre Dame came in at No. 4 in these week’s playoff rankings. Also, the Ohio State Buckeyes dropped their first game of the season against the Michigan State Spartans this weekend.

The contest against Stanford might have lost some lust when the Cardinal dropped their second game of the year, but Fighting Irish fans probably aren’t too worried about that one.

Although Notre Dame might be in great shape right now when it comes to the playoff, it remains to be seen if they will be passed up in the rankings — because there are some very hungry teams right behind it that did work in Week 12.

There’s always that chance that Michigan State and the Oklahoma Sooners jump ahead of Notre Dame. You know, since both teams are coming off of huge wins. Also, Oklahoma has now beaten the Baylor Bears and TCU Horned Frogs in back-to-back games.

Will a win against Boston College be enough to keep this squad in the mix (aka in the top four)?

Time will tell, of course.
