Christian McCaffrey had a great opportunity to take over the Heisman race with a Stanford Cardinal victory against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in Week 13.
Stanford captured the W, but McCaffrey didn’t necessarily take over the show. Instead, it was QB Kevin Hogan who looked like the Heisman contender out there.
McCaffrey’s 94-yard rushing performance isn’t going to win over the Heisman voters this late in the season, and that is especially the case after Ezekiel Elliott and Derrick Henry both had very impressive outings this weekend.

In the grand scheme of things, football is a team sport — and the team got the victory. In the process, the Cardinal eliminated the Fighting Irish from the College Football Playoff picture and they also kept their very, very slim playoff hopes alive.

The Cardinal will play in the Pac-12 championship game next. With a victory, they will surely get the CFP committee’s attention, but McCaffrey’s hopes of taking home the Heisman Trophy took a hit this weekend.
This late in the game, a player has to come up rather big to impress the voters — well, that is at least the case when there is no true front-runner this late in the season. McCaffrey still did his thing, but other contenders (like Elliott and Henry) will likely get more praise entering Week 14 … whether you agree with that or not. Regardless, McCaffrey is still in contention.
As for Notre Dame, well, it had one heck of a playoff run while it lasted.
