Ohio State Should Quit Complaining About College Football Playoff Rankings

Ohio State fans and players are bitter. Indeed, one Buckeye WR took a snarky shot at Alabama‘s strength of schedule this weekend, reposting an angry Twitter meme about the Crimson Tide’s supposed lack of viable opponents. While we can understand his disgruntled shock with the final picks for the CFP rapidly approaching, he also doesn’t seem to comprehend the metrics involved in the committee’s choices.

If we compare the Buckeyes to the Crimson Tide utilizing the committee’s criteria, Alabama wins in every category, hands down. For example, Alabama’s record versus under .500 teams is 8-1. OSU’s is 4-1. In the S&P+ strength of schedule rank, Alabama is ranked No. 17. The Buckeyes are at 50. In the Sagarin record versus Top 30, Alabama is 6-1, compared to Ohio State’s 1-1. Despite this, Buckeye fans have spouted every excuse in the book as to why their team isn’t running on all cylinders this season, blaming everything from the rain at the Michigan State game to Ezekiel Elliott‘s ball handling.

Granted, OSU did a fine job in the last game of the season against Michigan, but frankly, the rest of their season has been a cakewalk. And a cakewalk in which they struggled. Ohio State needs to accept the reality that they aren’t even conference champions this time around. They need to accept that a repeat performance at No. 1 in the country is one that is almost impossible to repeat.

Just ask the 2013 Florida State Seminoles. As an avowed Seminole fan, I can empathize. The Noles’ performance in the 2014 CFP was abysmal, to say the least. Yet the Seminoles also were undefeated before that game. Ohio State is not. It’s no fun to be the team that just misses out; but Notre Dame and Stanford are in the same boat. I know it’s hard, little Buckeyes, but maybe it’s time to stop crying and accept your fate. Not everyone can be in the playoffs, y’all. So let’s all just hush and watch Alabama destroy its opponents like the Greeks at Marathon.
