Following the loss to the Clemson Tigers, the South Carolina Gamecocks closed out a three-win season; and as expected, there’s much to talk about.

Their streak of bowl appearances is over, Pharoh Cooper has played his last game as a Gamecock and it’s sad that their faithful never got to see this phenomenal talent on a good team.

There’s no time to sulk, though. The next order of business is trying to determine who will replace the greatest coach in the history of the program. The Gamecocks, for a while, seemed to do something that they had never done every week. Following the departure of Steve Spurrier, this program now sits in limbo; and the desire to fill the position quickly could backfire if the wrong decision is made.

Ray Tanner doesn’t seem too concerned about that, however. He’s stated he wants the coaching position filled in December.

Here’s what we know so far. Tom Herman was in the mix and for whatever reason, isn’t anymore. If a poll could be taken today, Kirby Smart would probably win it by a landslide, but the job opened up in Athens and Smart is an alumni there which leads many people to believe that’s where he’ll end up. With that being said, the most current rumor is that Mark Richt will stay in the SEC East and migrate to Columbia, S.C.

The question is: is that truly what the Gamecocks need?

The move makes sense, but there’s also the idea that South Carolina is looking to take what Spurrier built and elevate it. Can Richt do that or would he only be capable of duplicating the recent success that the Gamecocks have had? Many questions still need to be answered that haven’t been, and those may not be answered by December. This program needs to find the right coach. If that doesn’t happen, more disappointment could be looming.
