Any time a school goes from having an established head coach to hiring an unproven assistant coach, it takes a huge gamble. That’s pretty much the trend among schools with the five worst hires of the 2015 season. Hiring an assistant coach is always a crapshoot. Four of the five come to their new jobs as assistants and the last was fired from his head coaching position. See these awful hires below.

Georgia Southern went from having one of the best head coaches in America that no one knew about (new Tulane head coach Willie Fritz), to a huge question mark in Colorado State defensive coordinator Tyson Summers. Giving up 31 points to that noted powerhouse, the University of Texas (San Antonio) should have been a huge red flag.

Firing Ruffin McNeill without a big-name guy lined up was probably a knee-jerk decision that the Pirates will eventually regret. Scottie Montgomery appealed to ECU regents because he is coming from a more respected academic institution, Duke, in the same state. Montgomery, the Blue Devils’ defensive coordinator, has not proven to be able to win as a head coach. That's something that McNeill did, despite an off year.

Richt is coming off being fired at Georgia, which has a large fan base. That means more money and facilities far more impressive than those in Coral Gables. The Hurricanes have a home attendance average that even a G5 school would be embarrassed to have. Those empty seats are going to make Richt’s job of attracting top-line talent a lot harder than it was in Georgia.

It might be just ironic that the dumpster fire that is Rutgers athletics hired a coach whose last name is the definition of the powdery residue left after burning. Ash is coming from Ohio State, where he was the defensive coordinator. This is a bad hire because Meyer is a hands-on head coach, whose coordinators have flopped after taking head coaching jobs. There is no reason to believe Ash will buck the trend.

BYU is the only school in America that requires its head coaches to be a member of a certain religion, the Latter Day Saints, so it was down to one qualified candidate, Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo, who decided to remain in Annapolis. That limited the pool of candidates to a kiddie one and, out of that shallow water, they were able to pull Oregon State defensive coordinator Kalani Sitake, whose defense gave up 54 points to California.
