The NCAA avoided a playoff system to determine their National Champion for quite a while, but they got crazy ratings once things changed. It might be time to consider expanding to an eight-team playoff, because there were some quality teams that got left out of the mix this season. And can you imagine how much more money they'd make with double the number of squads? Here are five reasons why eight teams in the NCAA playoffs would be a home run.

College football makes money no matter what kind of product they put onto the field, but having a playoff to determine who wins the title has only taken the NCAA to another level. They will inevitably expand the playoffs. It probably wouldn't make sense to expand it beyond eight teams due to the season's length and punishment the players are already taking, but that number seems like the perfect number to increase the hype.

Of course, there are some seasons in which only three to four quality teams exist in the field, but then years happen like this one where eight or nine teams have a case for why they should've been invited. Clemson was in danger of missing out on a playoff spot if they had lost the ACC title game, and that wouldn't have been fair for a team that was ranked No. 1 for so much of the season.

The BCS system was messed up for a variety of reasons, but the main one was that we sometimes didn't know which team had the best players and coaches. In an eight-team playoff, we would almost always see the nation's greatest rosters face off in the title game. This would make college football even more entertaining, and we all pretty much win in that scenario. Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly certainly wouldn't complain if the field was expanded.

Pundits who say that this would ruin the regular season are insane. If anything, it would make things more interesting. Imagine a scenario in which a team in the top 15 was actually still in the hunt for a championship. This would give college football's postseason a March Madness-level of hype and attention. Nobody could complain about that from the NCAA, and an eight-team playoff would only make the regular season a bigger deal.

The NFL figured out long ago that if it was unclear who would win the Super Bowl in any given year, then this would ultimately draw fans in from every part of the country. They have had great success with that formula, and the NCAA would do well to follow pro football's example. Making the playoffs an eight-team tournament would only add to college football's intrigue while also opening up opportunities for different programs to win.
