Duke Football Has Quietly Constructed An Excellent Recruiting Class

By Geoffrey Knox

What you’re about to read may shock you. If I wouldn’t have read it myself, I wouldn’t believe it either. It’s the middle of January and the Duke Blue Devils have a top 25 recruiting class in football.

Maybe this shouldn’t be surprising as schools all over the country (especially those most known for basketball) are making more serious attempts to become relevant in this country’s most popular sport. College football is big business, and everybody’s wanting to cash in.

It wasn’t too long ago when the Blue Devil faithful made their way to Charlotte for the ACC championship game. Unfortunately for them, they ran into the Florida State Seminoles when they got there. However, with the appearance, they gave themselves momentum and made a statement that Duke was finally serious about football.

It’s hard to determine what David Cutcliffe has in common with 17 and 18-year-old young men, but something about him is convincing the talent to come to Duke, and the results are being seen on the field. Duke is actually playing good football. They even were the subject of a little controversy this year when they got screwed in a game against the Miami Hurricanes. With the history of both of these teams, did you ever think you’d hear that in your lifetime?

The Blue Devils currently have four recruits who are ranked as four-star athletes and 17 three-star athletes. Four of the highlights of this class include Scott Bracey, Dylan Singleton, Chidi Okonya and Mark Birmingham. That’s good enough to give Duke the fourth best recruiting class in the ACC and one better than six teams in the SEC. With the emergence of some of the other ACC schools as above average and elite programs, it’s doubtful Duke has an ACC championship in their future, but it’s still cool that they’re part of a football conversation.
