5-Star OLB Erick Fowler Flips From LSU To Texas On National Signing Day 2016

By Jason Fletcher

The first major flip of National Signing Day 2016 has occurred as five-star outside linebacker Erick Fowler has signed with the Texas Longhorns and Charlie Strong. Fowler is rated as the No. 13 player in the entire country by Rivals.com and the No. 2 outside linebacker. His decision to play for the Longhorns has major implications on both programs.

Heading into National Signing Day, 247Sports.com had the Longhorns ranked just inside the top-30, but they’ve already jumped to No. 17 with commitments from Fowler, safety Brandon Jones and defensive tackle Chris Daniels. There are still a number of players on the board that have the Longhorns on their radar which makes it entirely possible for Strong to finish the day with a top-10 class.

As for Les Miles and LSU, it’s not a devastating development, but it was enough to knock them from the No. 1 class to No. 2. Any time a school loses a top recruit such as Fowler, it takes some adjustment and possibly forces the Tigers to change plans on the fly. It wasn’t a total shock that Fowler flipped so it’s likely that Miles has a plan B in place.

It’s just past 10 a.m. here on the East Coast and we’ve already had our first relative surprise. Expect much more as we go through the rest of National Signing Day 2016. Stick with RantSports for our full coverage throughout the day.
