Lorenzo Nunez Injury Not Devastating For South Carolina Football

By Geoffrey Knox

It appears that the knee injury suffered by South Carolina Gamecocks quarterback Lorenzo Nunez isn’t as serious as many originally thought. It’s apparently a sprained ligament and some hyperextension, and Nunez is expected to be absent up to and through the “Garnet and Black” spring game. This is the second time fans have seen Nunez go down in two seasons.

Head coach Will Muschamp tried to lighten things up by stating that’s why he had five quarterbacks at a press conference. Whether or not that comment was in good taste has been debated, but it does throw the attention back on as subject that has come up a lot recently. So far, there isn’t much to be learned from the race, and no one’s done anything to really distinguish themselves from one another.

If fans have their way, then the choice is probably Brandon Mcilwain. McIlwain was highly touted and represents a dual threat ability that the team hasn’t seen since the graduation of Connor Shaw.

There’s also some fear that if McIlwain didn’t get the starting spot he’d look at transferring. That’s anybody’s guess, but no one can expect him to be given the starting role either. So far, Perry Orth and Connor Mitch lead the way, but the depth chart will be shifted a few more times before the games begin to count.

Nunez has all of the physical gifts and will be ready for the regular season, and that’s good news. One thing is certain. The Gamecocks will need to get him on the field in some capacity as he possesses athletic ability that will make him hard to prepare for. That may be exactly what this team needs.
