Matt Limegrover Content With Decreased Responsibilities For Penn State Football

By Jason Shawley

Former Minnesota offensive coordinator and assistant head coach Matt Limegrover was relieved of his duties by head coach Tracy Claeys last fall. The longtime assistant to former head coach Jerry Kill had been with the Gophers since 2011. Normally a coach might not take the news of his dismissal so well, though since accepting a position at Penn State with James Franklin, Limegrover couldn’t be happier.

He was brought to Happy Valley this offseason and given the sole responsibility of coaching the offensive linemen. It’s a role that Limegrover relishes because he felt overwhelmed by all of his responsibilities at Minnesota.

“The best title I could have is offensive line coach. That’s what I was put on this Earth to do,” Limegrover told ESPN.com regarding his new gig. “I’m in such a good place right now, both physically and mentally.”

Penn State’s front five had one of the worst collective seasons in Big Ten history last year and has been extremely underwhelming over the past couple of campaigns. To give you an idea of just how bad the unit was, consider the idea of 103 sacks surrendered in three seasons. That’s what former quarterback Christian Hackenberg endured behind Herb Hand‘s o-line.

Despite Limegrover’s firing at Minnesota, he had success with the Gophers. The offense steadily showed improvement since 2011 until production dipped in 2015, leading to Claeys’ decision to go in another direction.

The Penn State offense has the potential improve greatly in 2016 with new offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead‘s exciting offense and a quarterback who’s more suited for Franklin’s offensive vision. If Limegrover can turn the line around, fans should see a completely different unit in 2016.
