Ohio State Football Will Have Nation's Best Recruiting Class In 2017

By Billy George

Urban Meyer has always been an excellent recruiter. A preliminary glance at all of the players he has put in the NFL is evidence of that in itself. However, he has never had a recruiting class quite as good as he will have with the Buckeyes in 2017. No one will top Ohio State‘s 2017 class.

Already highlighted by two five-star recruits in Josh Meyers, the nation’s top-ranked offensive tackle, and Jacksonville, Fla. cornerback Shaun Wade, the Buckeyes currently have the top-ranked class in the nation according to every major recruiting website. Currently having 17 commits in the class, all but one of them are four-star recruits or better, the only exception being three-star product Blake Haubeil who happens to be the No. 2 ranked kicker in the country. Don’t expect Meyer to slow down any time soon, either.

Meyer’s days as the head coach of the Florida Gators, a team in the SEC, have really paid dividends since his arrival at Ohio State. Having ties to many of the top high school football programs in the Sunshine State — and in the south in general — has helped him land commitments from stars like Joey Bosa, Vonn Bell and Raekwon McMillan. Powerhouse high school football programs like IMG Academy and St. Thomas Aquinas have been a pipeline for Meyer and Ohio State to bring in top-tier recruits. They are part of the reason why Ohio State will have the best 2017 recruiting class as well.

The Buckeyes are also the favorites to land the top two receivers in the country as well in St. Thomas Aquinas’ Trevon Grimes and Cass Tech’s Donovan Peoples-Jones. Cass Tech is another high-end high school football program that Meyer recruits from and, ironically, it’s located in Detroit, which is less than an hour away from Ann Arbor, the home of the Michigan Wolverines.

Cass Tech is where Ohio State picked up four-star running back Michael Weber and four-star defensive back Damon Webb, both of whom could play huge roles for the Ohio State football team this year. However, the extent of what this class can become goes further than just the players mentioned above.

I’m sure Buckeye fans know of Vonn Bell, a former five-star safety recruit Meyer snagged from the south. We very well could have a deja vu moment with the addition of another southern standout in Grand Prairie, Texas’ Jeffrey Okudah.

According to ESPN recruiting analyst Gerry Hamilton, Okudah named Ohio State his leader last fall, and so far nothing has changed. The addition the 6-foot-1, 194-pound prospect would be huge as the Buckeyes lack depth at the safety position. Okudah is the top-ranked safety prospect in the country

Not excited yet? Allow me to elevate your interest level.

As you may have already figured out, Ohio State picked up five-star defensive end Nick Bosa in the 2016 class. Meyer always seems to have an excellent defensive line. Well, remember how I mentioned that Meyer had ties with IMG Academy? According to the predictions on 247sports.com, Ohio State is the favorite to land yet another IMG Academy prospect in five-star defensive end Joshua Kaindoh. What’s interesting about Kaindoh is that he also wants to go to medical school, and Ohio State University has the 33rd best medical school in the country, according to usnews.com. Not many schools with a legitimate football program come close to that.

Ohio State is also the leader to pick up Clairton, Pa. defensive back Lamont Wade, the 37th-ranked overall recruit and fifth-ranked cornerback prospect in the country, as well as four-star Cincinnati, Ohio cornerback prospect Amir Riep. The cornucopia of talent that this class will have is uncanny, and just the mere thought of seeing these guys suited up in scarlet and gray uniforms on fall Saturdays is crazy exciting!

We are living in glorious times, Buckeye fans! Live it up while it lasts. Coaches like Urban Meyer don’t come around very often.
