The Five Best Tweets About West Virginia Mountaineers' Tavon Austin's Wonderlic Score

Tavon Austin
Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

As many of you know, West Virginia Mountaineer Tavon Austin was well on his way to climbing into the top ten of the NFL Draft’s first round. Everything was going great for him until, oh no! He got a seven on the Wonderlic Test. Tavon Austin then cried and questioned why his opportunity to play in the NFL passed over him so quickly and we never heard from him again.

Right…

The reality of the situation is that this test means nothing. (For those of you who are still catching up, Austin is still projected in the top ten. His test score didn’t mean anything.) Players fail this test all of the time. Adrian Peterson, Minnesota Vikings’ great got a nine on it.

I love that we live in an age of social media. I love the fact that when news breaks, if it wasn’t actually broken over Twitter, within minutes the entire platform known as Twitter explodes into a predictable flood of opinions I don’t care about. So whether I liked it or not, I was going to learn how 500 different people felt about the Wonderlic.

Fortunately, every once in a while, somebody is actually funny on Twitter. Shocking, I know.

This got me thinking, which is also shocking. I thought it would be appropriate to applaud these individuals, as they appear to be in the extreme minority on my Twitter feed. Every day I stumble across hundreds of Tweets that I wouldn’t look twice at, but I decided it could be fun to let these people know they are appreciated.

I’ve put together a list of the five best tweets I came across throughout the week in regards to Tavon Austin’s low Wonderlic score.

@EDSB’s Touchdown

Tavon Austin
Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

This is great. The Wonderlic seriously doesn’t mean anything. It’s almost as if Tavon Austin decided to score that number on purpose. If he did, what would change?

@CelebrityHotTub’s Cube Root

Tavon Austin
Michael C. Johnson-USA TODAY Sports

This is another tweet mocking the existence of the Wonderlic Test. It makes a great point and sarcastically challenges the relevance of the test by suggesting nothing changes regardless of a player’s result.

@FauxCoachHolgs’ All He Knows is Seven

Tavon Austin
Robert Mayer-USA TODAY Sports

@FauxCoachHolgs is a must-follow on Twitter. Posing as the fake twitter account for Mountaineers’ head coach Dana Holgorsen, @FauxCoachHolgs delivers priceless WVU comedy, and frankly I’m not so sure this isn’t really Coach Holgorsen.

Here, he makes a witty comment about Tavon Austin being incapable of scoring anything other than a seven.

@MichaelMinnich’s Tackling Ability

Tavon Austin
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

@MichaelMinnich makes a great point with his tweet. Once again, the relevance of this Wonderlic test is questioned. Does a test score change the way someone plays football? His hashtag makes the tweet.

@PatrickSouthern’s WVU Race

Tavon Austin
Rob Christy-USA TODAY Sports

Patrick Southern is another must-follow for WVU fans. His sarcastic tweets constantly add flavor to the news of West Virginia. Here, he makes light of the defensiveness of WVU fans over the pointless Wonderlic Test.

West Virginia Mountaineers’ Tavon Austin Scores Seven on NFL Wonderlic Test

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

West Virginia Mountaineers star wide receiver Tavon Austin has done nothing but improve his NFL draft stock this offseason, but goofed up during the infamous Wonderlic Test earlier this week. Austin got a 7-out-of-50 on the Wonderlic. It seems like every year, right after the Wonderlic test, right after somebody drops a single digit [...]

Big News Out of Morgantown for the West Virginia Mountaineers

It has been a busy day for the West Virginia Mountaineers. First, the team received a commitment from a four star quarterback by the name of William Crest. Five Reasons Big 12 Needs a Conference Championship in Football

Five Reasons the Big 12 Needs a Conference Championship in Football

Big 12 Football
Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

There has been a debate as of late that involves the Big 12 as a football conference. The debate is whether or not the Big 12 athletic conference should have a conference championship game in football.

See, the game used to be played “way back when” from 1996-2010. The game ceased to exist after the Colorado Buffaloes and the Missouri Tigers left the conference.

Now, because a conference championship game is not being played at the end of each season, a number of Big 12 schools are arguing that not having a championship game hurts their chances of making an appearance in the BCS national championship game.

You won’t find any arguments with that from me. I agree wholeheartedly with that statement. The Big 12 is only hurting itself by not re-adding the title game.

The problem is that the NCAA requires conferences to have 12 teams in order for a championship game to be played. The Big 12 sits currently at ten teams. By adding two teams, the Big 12 could reinstate the championship game and please fans, coaches, players and athletic directors alike.

How hard would it be for the Big 12 to find two teams ready to join? Well I don’t think it’d be too hard. The conference is as stable as it has ever been, with only one of the ten teams not making a bowl game in 2012.

The Big 12 is left as one of the few power conferences in football, alongside the SEC, ACC and Big Ten. Finding two solid teams to join shouldn’t be a problem.

There are a number of reasons why the Big 12 should be pursuing a championship game, and I’ve laid out five of the clearest.

Without further ado, here are the five reasons the Big 12 needs a football championship game.

The Fans Want It to Happen

Big 12 Football
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

There is nothing more thrilling in any sporting event than a championship game, where everything is on the line.

Even more so in college football, these games are some of the most exciting experiences a college fan can have.

There's a Huge Profit to Be Made

Big 12 Football
Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

This should be fairly obvious. The amount of money to be made through a championship game is ridiculous. After selling all of the seats to fans, the conference could profit off of championship merchandise and much more.

BCS Factor

Big 12 Football
Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

A conference championship in the Big 12 would help solidify conference teams a place in the BCS.

A championship game would give the conference champs an extra win to propel them in the BCS rankings at the end of the season, whereas a team without a championship game can be hurt.

Every Other Major Conference Has One

Big 12 Football
John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

What do the following conferences have in common: The ACC, the SEC, the Big Ten?

All are major football conferences and all have a conference championship game. The Big 12 needs to join the club.

6 of 6

It Would Add to the Regular Season Drama

Big 12 Football
Michael C. Johnson-USA TODAY Sports

A championship game makes regular season games mean so much more. A team is motivated to reach a championship game. It can benefit from two teams having a shot at the conference title as opposed to only one.

A Closer Look at Texas Tech Red Raiders 2013 Football Schedule

The Texas Tech Red Raiders have released their 2013 football schedule and a number of things are drawn to attention right away. The first is an early conference battle with the TCU Horned Frogs in only the third week of the season. This, in conjunction with the non-conference schedule consisting of the SMU Mustangs, the [...]

The Baylor Bears’ 2013 football schedule is out, and it looks to be a fairly tough one. The non-conference schedule isn’t much too write home about, but let’s be honest, nobody’s is. You’re not supposed to be ready to play the toughest competition in only the first few weeks of the season. With non-conference games [...]

5 Biggest Errors In Pro Football Weekly’s Review of West Virginia Mountaineers’ Geno Smith

The Five Biggest Errors in Pro Football Weekly’s Review of West Virginia Mountaineers’ Geno Smith

West Virginia Mountaineers
Rob Christy-USA TODAY Sports

The big news out of this year’s NFL draft is Pro Football Weekly’s Review, and I use the term review lightly as the entire thing was more of a stab or roast than an actual review, was the publication's look at West Virginia Mountaineers quarterback Geno Smith.

The report, written by Nolan Nawrocki, had Geno Smith listed as the sixth best quarterback in the NFL draft, with USC golden boy Matt Barkley listed as the No.1 quarterback.

As a person who has seen Geno Smith play football every Saturday since Fall of 2010, I can assure you that this report is complete bogus. This “scout” shows complete bias in his review and does not assess Smith fairly.

The report says the following:

“(Smith is) not a student of the game. Nonchalant field presence -- does not command respect from teammates and cannot inspire. Mild practice demeanor -- no urgency. Not committed or focused -- marginal work ethic. Interviewed poorly at the combine and did not show an understanding of concepts on the white board. Opted not to compete at the Senior Bowl and has approached offseason training as if he has already arrived, and it shows in his body with minimal muscle definition or strength.”

Anyone who has ever seen or known Geno Smith knows that this report is simply inaccurate. There is simply no evidence to support these claims. This “scout” has likely only seen Geno Smith play football in bits and pieces throughout his college career. There is no other excuse for someone to be this oblivious about a player with as much respect as Geno Smith.

This “scout” is so quick to bash other athletes, so hopefully he won’t mind a little bit of criticism towards himself.

Here are the five biggest errors in Pro Football Weekly’s review of West Virginia Mountaineers’ Geno Smith.

2 of 6

He’s Not a Student of the Game

West Virginia Mountaineers
Andrew Weber-USA TODAY Sports

This is simply not true. Geno Smith works harder than any player out there to learn how to play the game of football and improve himself.

He stayed all four years at West Virginia to develop himself fully. To say Smith is not a student of the game is simply incorrect.

3 of 6

Smith Has a Marginal Work Ethic

West Virginia Mountaineers
Michael C. Johnson-USA TODAY Sports

To say Smith has a marginal work ethic shows that this guy doesn’t know anything about him. Anyone associated with the game of college football knows Smith’s work ethic.

In fact, Smith’s work ethic was so strong that after the Mountaineers’ big win in Austin against top five Texas, while the team went out to party, Smith went to the film room to prepare for Texas Tech in the following week.

There is absolutely no evidence to support a weak work ethic in Geno Smith.

4 of 6

Smith has Minimal Muscle Definition and Strength

West Virginia Mountaineers
Michael C. Johnson-USA TODAY Sports

First off, since when is muscle definition a key attribute for an NFL quarterback? Secondly, Smith has more arm strength than any quarterback in the draft. His claim to fame in college was his deep ball accuracy.

Regardless of whether or not Smith has “minimal muscle definition” or not, I’m sure he can get the ball downfield and show accuracy while doing it.

5 of 6

Smith is Not Committed or Focused

West Virginia Mountaineers
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

You know, throwing for 20 touchdowns in the first five games of the season and more than 300 yards in each game doesn’t take any focus at all.

There was also that time that Smith threw 258 passes without an interception, but I guess he was just sleepwalking through those as well...

6 of 6

Smith Has Approached Off-season Training as if He’s Already Arrived

West Virginia Mountaineers
Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

The only thing Geno Smith has done this off-season to back this statement up is miss the Senior Bowl and frankly, a lot of NFL quarterbacks skipped their Senior Bowl. You know who else skipped the senior bowl? This dude’s golden boy Matt Barkley, who played significantly fewer games than Smith in the 2012 season.

A Closer Look at the Kansas State Wildcats’ 2013 Football Schedule

Matt Kartozian-USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas State Wildcats’ 2013 schedule is out and it seems to be a solid schedule throughout. The non-conference schedule is nothing to write home about. Featuring games against the North Dakota State Bison, the UL Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns and the UMass Minutemen, I’m disappointed that this team didn’t challenge itself more out-of-conference. I would [...]
