The Huskers have had their ups and downs so far this year. The season, surprisingly, is quickly closing in on the halfway point, which makes me sad, because college football may just be the best sport in America.
Alas, my sadness will do no good, so on to the real news.
Nebraska’s offense has been up and down this year. They have had their bright, shining moments, and their not so bright and shiny moments. One thing has been constant though, and his name is Rex Burkhead.
I’m not sure there has been a better running back in the B1G 10. Yes, Montee Ball has had a spectacular season so far, but he also has proven players in Russell Wilson and Nick Toon around him.
Rex? He has a sophomore quarterback in Taylor Martinez, who has admittedly been playing well this year, but he has only played quarterback for the past 3 years. He’s still relatively young. Receivers? No offense to Quincy Enunwa, Brandon Kinnie, Kyler Reed, or Jamal Turner, but none of them have been consistently spectacular. That’s not to say it is their fault, but there’s just not enough offense to go around, and Taylor’s passing has not always been perfect.
But Rex Burkhead has been the workhorse for the Huskers. So far this season, Rex has 107 attempts, 635 yards, and 9 touchdowns. He also has 8 receptions for 68 yards, and another score. Rex Burkhead has been running over, through, and around defenders. In averaging 5.9 yards per carry, he is having a spectacular season.
Burkhead has been the steady hand. Whenever the Huskers need a 1st down on a short 3rd down, they usually find a way to get the ball to Burkhead, or have run the option in which Taylor Martinez picks up the first. Burkhead also made quite a few spectacular plays in that Ohio State game, especially on his last two touchdowns.
For all the criticism the Huskers have had through the season, Rex Burkhead has deserved none of it. He has consistently worked his tail off, and will continue to do so. Tim Beck, give this man the ball and let him to go work.
