Can Nebraska’s Defense Rise To The Challenge Next Year?
The Nebraska Cornhuskers defense was supposed to be the strong point heading into the B1G 10 season. What happened was far from predicted. The Cornhuskers defense did not live up to expectations when they were needed the most.
Nebraska’s defense in struggled in big games against Wisconsin and Michigan. They also struggled in a game that they should have won against Northwestern. They did come out against Michigan State and Iowa, but that loss to Northwestern cost the Huskers a chance at a B1G 10 title.
With spring practice just around the corner, a major focus is going to be on the defense. The Huskers have to replace a key component on all three levels of the defense, as highly noted by fans and media.
Jared Crick was injured early in the season which allowed other members of the Husker defensive line to grow in their game. Baker Steinkuhler, Eric Martin, Cameron Meredith, and Chase Rome were able to get a lot of extra snaps. Unfortunately it also led times where opposing offenses controlled the line of scrimmage.
Lavonte David was one of the best linebackers in country next season. He made play after play to preserve the Husker season, refusing to quit and let his senior season end poorly. Sean Fisher and Will Compton have had a few seasons to learn the system. Incoming linebackers Michael Rose and Zaire Anderson are going to challenge for a starting position. Nebraska’s linebackers will have to make a lot of plays this season if the Huskers want to win games.
Alfonzo Dennard had been one of the best coverage corners in the country two seasons ago. Last season, he was injured early on and never quite was the played how he was made to live up to. Mohammed Seisay is an up and coming junior college player who has signed with the Huskers. He is rated as one of the top cover corners in junior college. With Austin Cassidy also leaving the secondary, the secondary is also in trouble.
Nebraska’s defense has many question marks coming into the new season. The new and old players have many challenges to encounter in the new season. John Papuchis will have many question marks to fill. He is an up and coming coach, but no one knows how he is going to coach his defense.
Nebraska’s defense is needed to replace a few starters. The Huskers have quite the task to do. Here’s to hoping an off-season will bring back the blackshirts we know.
