Can Kenny Bell Become Nebraska’s No 1 Receiver?

Brandon Kinnie was the undisputed number one receiver for Nebraska last season. He did not play like it at times, especially with all those drops. But the big body receiver showed flashes of what Husker fans had been hoping for. Now that Kinnie has graduated, the question beckons: who is going to be Nebraska’s new number one receiver?

The first man that comes straight to mind is Kenny Bell. Bell and Husker quarterback Taylor Martinez seemed to find a connection late last season, where he became the quarterback’s favorite target. Bell caught three or more passes in a game six times last season, including five for ninety-eight yards against Iowa. He finished the season strong against South Carolina, hauling in three passes for fifty-three yards and a score. He finished the season with thirty two catches for 461 yards and three scores.

As the Huskers prepare for spring practice, can Kenny Bell become the Huskers top receiver? Standing at 6’1″ and 180 pounds, Bell is a bit on the small side when talking about receivers. However, that has not stopped Bell from making big play after big play this past season.

For Bell to become the number one receiver, one thing he needs to work on is his route running. At times he was a bit sloppy, letting defenders get inside position on him, or not being on the same page with Martinez. Kenny also dropped a couple of easy passes last season, and should be working on that throughout spring camp.

Kenny Bell can become the number one receiver for the Huskers, no doubt about it, but he is going to have to put the work into it. Husker fans saw only glimpses of what is possible, as Bell can be far better. He may never be a Maurice Purify in terms of making catches, but he can be a Nate Swift type of guy who hauls in everything thrown his way. He may not have the biggest body, but he sure is going to go all out for it.
