At this writing, shortly after 9 PM ET, the New England Patriots are still quiet on the free agency front. They haven’t been a part of the flurry of signings in the early hours contracts can be tendered, nor are they at the forefront of any rumors. The team desperately needs a deep threat at receiver if they want to win another Super Bowl while quarterback Tom Brady is still going strong, and they’re watching a lot of candidates come off the board.

Vincent Jackson is in Tampa. Marques Colston re-upped with New Orleans. Brandon Marshall’s been traded to Chicago. The Washington Redskins have signed every receiver off the sandlot. Are the Patriots boxing themselves into a position where they only choice they have is to go deep—bad pun intended—on Pittsburgh Steeler wide receiver Mike Wallace—or be left without?

We aren’t condition critical yet, but it’s getting there. I know a lot of Patriot fans are high on signing Brandon Lloyd, given his familiarity with the system of offensive coordinator Josh McDaniel, formerly the head coach in Denver. But while Lloyd can certainly be an asset, I have my doubts if he can really stretch the field the way Brady needs. New England could take a look at Reggie Wayne, formerly of Indianapolis, but the rumors are thick that he’s going where Peyton Manning lands. The best option, short of getting Wallace, might be a move rich in irony and that’s to go for New York Giants’ receiver Mario Manningham.

The Giants likely can’t afford to pay Manningham, given that he’s their #3 receiver and his talent is such that he can and should be paid like a high #2 or low #1 receiver. He would be ideal in New England, although Patriot fans would have to live with signing the man who made the incredible fourth-quarter catch in  the Super Bowl that jumpstarted the Giants’ winning drive. For New Englanders, this would be tantamount to the Red Sox signing Aaron Boone for 2004 or Bucky Dent for 1979. But if Manningham helped Brady and Belichick get a sixth AFC title and fourth Super Bowl ring, something tells me the fans would get over it.

Mike Wallace remains the best option on the board, but New England should have feelers out to Manningham right now.

  1. Aj says:

He would just be trading role in Ny with similar role in NE. NE has Branch, Welker & Chad. Once again he would at best be a #3.

  2. danflaherty says:

Manningham is better than Branch, and he and Welker fill different types of roles as receivers, which is why I think New England should want him. How he feels about them is, of course, another question.
