Brees not sweating his contact situation
With Saints All-Pro quarterback Drew Brees only having one year left on the 6-year contract that he signed as a free agent in 2005, free agency is looming ominous for the Saints in just about twelve short months.
While the Saints are undoubtedly pondering over his next contract in back rooms at their facility in Metarie, Louisiana, Brees says that he isn’t even thinking about it. The New Orleans Times-Picayune asked him briefly yesterday about his current contract situation, and Brees responded by saying:
“It’s not an issue during the season,” Brees said. “It’s not on my radar. I’m just thinking about winning games. But obviously when the time comes, we’ll definitely be talking.”
That is good news for Saints fans, as he is focused on the upcoming game against the Seattle Seahawks and the rest of the season, and isn’t focused on something that is out of control at this point in time. However, what should make fans a little uneasy is that with the impending NFL players lockout next season, no one knows what the structure of the NFL Players Union will be, and how players contracts will be done after a new labor agreement is reached. This could be a snag in the contract negotiations, but there is no way the Saints don’t lock up Brees for the rest of his career, and Brees will not want to turn his back on all he has done for the city, and for the Saints franchise.
