Saints sign top undrafted rookie free agent DeAndre McDaniel
It didn’t take the New Orleans Saints long to make a splash once the NFL officially opened for business again on Monday.
After the league allowed teams to negotiate with undrafted free agents, the Saints have reportedly signed a big fish to compete in their secondary. Former Clemson University DeAndre McDaniel tweeted on Monday evening that he had signed with the New Orleans Saints. His official tweet was: I’m a Saint twitter! New Orleans here I come!!!!!!!” (@dmcdani2).
This is a big signing for the Saints. Not only is it the first undrafted free agent that they have reportedly signed, he was also one of the top undrafted rookies on the market. Several blogs had him rated as one of the top undrafted rookie free agent, and DraftHeadquarters had him listed at the top one.
While the Saints are deep at cornerback, the safety portion of their secondary could be weakened with the impending free agency. With more their 30 free agents on the team, Malcolm Jenkins is the only safety currently on the roster. The team would obviously like to resign Roman Harper, but he is a free agent and could likely receive some big offers if he hits the market. Additionally, Darren Sharper is getting long in the tooth and can’t be expected to continue the pace he was on in 2009.
Overall, this is a low risk, high reward signing for the Saints and is hopefully a sign of bigger things to come in this shortened free agent signing period.

Rob, this is where the gold nuggets are found in the NFL. The Saints have consistently “worked the dirt and the rocks” and yielded gold. How do you think they have such great talent and stay under the salsry cap? Every one of these rookies can prove themsleves once they get into camp. Mc Daniel should have been a third round pick. It’s called DRAFTING FOR VALUE.
