New Orleans Saints Can Afford To Let Go Of Wide Receiver Marques Colston

Marques Colston’s days as a New Orleans Saint could be numbered as he is probably the most likely free agent not to be resigned. According to a report by Dan Pompei the Saints have not made any attempts to resign Marques Colston. Colston has caught for at least 1,000 yards in every season of his career except one, so the Saints would be losing great production from that standpoint. While I am sure it would be hard for the Saints to let go of Colston I think they can afford it and not lose a beat. The Saints’ offense is so good that letting go of Colston would not be such a big hit. Let’s remember that the Saints should be able to retain wide receiver Robert Meachem and they would still have wide receivers Devery Henderson and Lance Moore when he comes back from injury. The biggest reason I think the Saints can afford to let go of Colston is because of superstar tight end, Jimmy Graham. Graham is quarterback Drew Brees’s favorite target and his production should continue next season as he is quickly becoming one of the NFL’s rising stars.

Another reason the Saints can let go of Colston is because it would take the pressure off of trying to resign Brees and offensive lineman Carl Nicks. I think in any scenario Brees is going to get a long term extension and if not the Saints will franchise tag him. However, I also truly believe the Saints will find a way to get a deal done and resign Brees without using their franchise tag. With that said I think Nicks will probably get the franchise tag from the Saints and I think it is more important to retain Nicks than Colston. Nicks is arguably the best offensive lineman in the league today and protecting the quarterback is a top priority for teams with great offenses. For these reasons I think the Saints will lose Colston to free agency, but he is such a great player that he will definitely be one of the most sought after free agents and get picked up quickly by another team.

I agree 100%, Brees is so good he can make anybody in football who can catch a ball look good. Jimmy Graham and Fattened Sproles are his two favorite targets to throw to whether its Graham down field or Sproles running a screen. Brees could probably make another 6’4/6’5 7th round white out look good and if I remember correctly who fumbled a ball against the 49ers in the playoffs and the first pass of the season against the Packers? They need to let him go!

The Saints would be stupid to drop their top wide receiver, but the 49ers will sure be happy to sign him.
