It was announced yesterday that the New Orleans Saints signed former Denver Broncos defensive tackle, Brodrick Bunkley, to a 5-year deal worth $25 million with $9 million guaranteed. The 6’2″ 306 lb Bunkley should be able to improve the Saints’ defensive line as Shaun Rogers and Aubrayo Franklin had sub-par seasons last year. Bunkley fills a need for the Saints as they are in need of a good defensive tackle because Rogers and Franklin did not pan out and likely will not be re-signed. Furthermore, Bunkley should give the Saints’ defense a nice energy spark as they look to rejuvenate their defense under new defensive coordinator, Steve Spagnuolo.

At the age of 28, Bunkley will be entering his 7th season, first as a New Orleans Saint. Bunkley has career totals of 187 tackles to go along with 6 sacks and should be able to contribute to the Saints front line right away. The signing of Bunkley was another smart acquisition by the Saints as he will provide the Saints with depth and experience. Bunkley has played in 9 playoff games in which he started 5 of those games. I like this signing by the Saints because they are getting a good quality DT for a good price and he will probably be able to come in and start right away. Bunkley is known for being able to stop the run and will provide the Saints with an athletic presence on their defensive line.

The Saints have made some great moves during their tumultuous offseason and the signing of Bunkley is an example of the great additions they have made. In addition to Bunkley the Saints were able to sign offensive guard Ben Grubbs to replace Carl Nicks and they were able to retain wide receiver Marques Colston. Despite all of the controversy brought on by the “bountygate” scandal, the Saints continue to make smart moves this offseason by adding and re-signing quality players.
