The New Orleans Saints have signed former Atlanta Falcons’ linebacker, Curtis Lofton, to a 5-year deal. The Saints continue to sign players to help provide depth on the defensive end. The signing of Lofton could be an indicator that the Saints expect to lose middle linebacker, Jonathan Vilma, for a few if not all games for next season as a result of the bounty punishments. If that is the case Lofton should be able to come in and take over the starting duties of Vilma with no problem. Saints’ general manager, Mickey Loomis, had this to say in regards to the signing of Lofton:

“Curtis is a versatile, hard-working player that has displayed a knack for being around the football, and more importantly, making plays on the ball,” Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said in a statement released Saturday night. “He has the ability to play all three linebacker positions and we feel that he’s just entering the prime of his career. We think he can come to New Orleans and fit in well and provide us with a significant contribution to our defense.”

Lofton will be a key contributor to the Saints’ defense right away as he is a tremendous tackler who has the ability to grab interceptions. Lofton posted a career high 147 tackles last season which was also good enough to lead the Falcons in the category. One of the best attributes Lofton brings to the table is his age; he is only 25 and entering his 5th season in the NFL. Furthermore, Lofton seems to be entering the prime of his career and with his youth and versatility he will be able to contribute immensely for the Saints’ defense. I applaud the Saints for being able to make so many great moves in light of the ongoing controversy surrounding “bountygate.” With the signing of so many quality defensive players the Saints defense is looking to be quite formidable. However, I still think the Saints need to look to the draft to add a few more players to really make their defense deep.
