2011 NFL Draft: New York Giants Select Maryland RB Da’Rel Scott With 221st Pick

With their final pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the New York Giants selected Maryland running back Da’Rel Scott. This shouldn’t come as a surprise to many that the Giants drafted someone to add depth to the backfield, but most people thought it would happen much earlier.

That seems to be the theme of the Giants third day picks.

Da’Rel Scott is brings a ton of speed to the table and could give the Giants a serious weapon in the passing game from the running back position. He ran a 4.34 40 at the combine and had good hands.

He is very explosive and gives the Giants a home run threat, which they don’t currently have in Ahmad Bradshaw or Brandon Jacobs. In fact, in Scott’s final game, he had touchdown runs of 61 and 91; that’s pretty incredible for one game.

Scott dropped in the class because he was part of a running back by committee system at Maryland, but what he brings is exactly what the Giants need. He projected best in the NFL as a third down RB, which is exactly what the Giants would use him for.

They could also try him out in the return game given his track star speed.

Some negatives are his injury struggles and the fact that he didn’t pass block much in college, but as far as value goes this is a good pick.

The Giants cleaned up in this draft; we could be looking back on this one in a couple of years as one of the better drafts under Reese.
