New York Giants Head Coach Tom Coughlin Talks Lockout, Plaxico Burress
With everything that’s going on—the lockout, Plaxico Burress’ pending release, and the Eli Manning led workouts—Tom Coughlin took time out of his busy schedule to talk to NFL Network and make himself transparent to the fans during this dark time of no football.
You may think Coughlin is just enjoying his time off, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. The longer the lockout drags on, the more himself and the coaches have to make adjustments to the offseason workout schedule. With so much uncertainty, he remains busy.
“I see eight weeks of the offseason program have gone by and we haven’t had our rookies in, we haven’t had any of our veterans in, we haven’t had our hands on our surgical repairs,” Coughlin said. “And if it continues like this right up to training camp, there will be no offseason, and of course that is going to affect your installation schedule, how rapidly your rookies can pick all this up. It’s going to be without a doubt, some very serious selections that have to be made on the part of coaches as to what pace they introduce their offense, defense and special teams.”
The heat on Plaxico Burress has started to come back, especially with him possibly playing for the Jets next year considering they showed interest in him back when the Giants released him in 2008.
As far as him returning to the Giants, the coaches haven’t discussed it according to Coughlin.
“Well that really hasn’t been discussed by any of us,” Coughlin said. “That will have to remain to be seen. But I’m happy, because there’s a nice article about Tiffany Burress and her struggles with her two children and her full-time job and she is starting a clothing line and Plaxico is still in prison. I’m hoping their family can be reunited real quick.”
Many teams have been having voluntary workouts and the Giants are no exception. Eli Manning has been holding workouts at Hoboken High School in Hoboken, New Jersey where Eli resides during the season. Several players have gotten involved and Coughlin has taken notice.
“Glad to see that Eli was getting together with the receiving corps, he had the tight ends and a couple of running backs in there as well,” Coughlin said. “I’m just grateful that there were some degree of workout there, I know that guys are working out on their own and I am confident that they will condition and stay in shape.”
I should point out they aren’t the only ones working out on their own, most of the Giants who have not shown up are participating in workouts of their own or, in Justin Tuck’s case, making use of their time off by helping out in charitable organizations and things of that nature.
I’ve said it several times that team chemistry during the lockout is going to give the Giants and some of the other veteran teams a leg up for the 2011 season. These workouts are a step in the right direction.
