After spending the weekend out of town, I got to sit back and just listen to the commentary after the New York Giants trounced the Atlanta Falcons instead of immediately giving my reaction.

What I’m seeing is a lot of people comparing this team to the 2007 Giants team that went all the way, which I would love it if it were true.

Unfortunately it is not.

First of all, this team has picked it up in the run game, but it is not near the running team it was in 2007. To beat the Green Bay Packers this weekend, the Giants run game will have to be even better than it was on Sunday against the Falcons.

Secondly, I fully expected the Giants to dismantle the Falcons because they were a fraud of a team who had not beat anyone of worth on the road in an outdoor stadium. Everyone seems to be blowing the win out of proportion.

It was a dominating performance, but it should not give you more confidence than you already should have had moving forward to the Packers game. I suppose if you doubted the Giants you might feel differently, but that isn’t the case for me and most fans.

I expected nothing less when the matchup was set.

Third, and most importantly, the road traveled in this year’s playoffs looks much more difficult than the one from 2007. Sure, the Cowboys and Packers were both good that year, but neither of them felt like elite teams like the remaining three in the NFC do this season.

The Packers fell one game short of perfection, the 49ers have the best defense in the NFL, and the Saints, should the Giants face them, would be playing them in New Orleans where it seems they can never lose.

I will never count out the Giants, but after the 2007 regular season finale you felt like that team had a chance to make a lot of noise in the playoffs. This year that feeling is certainly there, but not as quantified as it was that season.

If the Giants pull of the miracle run to the Super Bowl, I will be very pleasantly surprised.
