Kurt Warner—former NFL quarterback, two-time MVP, Super Bowl MVP, three time Super Bowl participant, and frequently debated Hall of Fame candidate—apparently does not believe Eli Manning is Hall of Fame worthy.

He doesn’t even think the discussion should be started yet, which most do after Eli became just the fifth player in NFL history to win Super Bowl MVP twice.

“I fully disagree with that,” Warner said on Arizona Sports 620 radio. “Because I know we put a lot of weight on championships, and rightfully so. But championships are won as a team, and I’m fully convinced of that. You never see one guy—a great player, great quarterback—carry a team through the playoffs and into a Super Bowl and win a Super Bowl that way.”

“Yeah, he made the plays down the stretch, no question about it and his team has had two great playoff runs. But I also look at the rest of his career. He is an 82-percent quarterback rating throughout his career, he has had five of his eight seasons where he has thrown 16 interceptions or more. His completion percentage on his career is 58-percent. To me, those aren’t Hall of Fame numbers.””

“Every time you step on the field, you’re a game changer, you’re a difference maker. And I don’t believe Eli Manning has been that guy until this year. I think this year is the first time in his career where he’s become that guy.”

While I agree with Warner to an extent, I certainly would not put Eli in Canton if his career ended tomorrow, but that still doesn’t mean we cannot start the discussion.

Just for your information, there is only one former starting quarterback with two Super Bowl rings who is NOT in the Hall of Fame—Jim Plunkett.

Eli’s numbers after eight years are better than Plunkett’s across the board, who never had a 3,000 yard passing season in his 15 year career.

If Eli continues to put up the numbers he has the previous three seasons, there is no question he will be Hall of Fame worthy. Thankfully Warner agrees with that at least.

“If he is that guy the rest of his career and finishes with just two championships, then yes, I believe he becomes a Hall of Famer,” he continued. “But just because he has two championships up to this point, he’s been extremely inconsistent throughout his career. We all know he can get hot. But that doesn’t automatically solidify one player, catapult into Hall of Fame status because his team got hot, he played extremely well for just select periods of his career.”

Something tells me there is a hint of jealousy or resentment towards Eli based on these comments by Warner. Not only has Eli won more championships than Warner in less appearances, but he took over for Warner the one year they were both on the Giants in 2004.

Tom Coughlin started Warner his first year as coach and got the Giants out to a 5-2 record. But at the first sign of trouble—two losses in a row to get to 5-4—Coughlin benched Warner and started Eli, who was a rookie.

Warner would leave the following season.

The problem I have with Warner’s comments is there isn’t any reason to believe Eli will slow down in his production. He’s had more than 4,000 yards and 27 touchdowns in each of the past three seasons.

Ever since the 2007-2008 playoff run, Eli has been one of the more consistent quarterbacks in the league. Every now and then he has a bad game, but that is most quarterbacks.

Warner is not being insightful when he says Eli isn’t worthy of a place in Canton, not many quarterbacks are through eight years of their career.

He is clearly jealous of the success and all of the Hall of Fame talk surrounding Eli after his brilliant performance in the Super Bowl, when he himself did not get as much after he retired.

Shape up Warner. Stop letting your emotions get in the way of making purely objective analysis.

7 Rants to “Kurt Warner Comments About Eli Manning Reek of Jea...”

  1. Jason J. Connor says:

The headline is kind of misleading and ridiculous. Warner statements are ALL true. If Eli retired today, he does not have the kind of numbers to be a Hall of Fame QB, but IF he continues to play at that level for another five or six years, then, yes, he IS a Hall of Fame QB. Drama queen much?

    • Jeff Shull says:

Yea but the problem is there is no reason to believe Eli won’t continue to put up big numbers…he has never missed a start in his career and he’s been putting up good numbers since 2008…

  2. alex says:

    Warner’s statements are WRONG.

This dude has had one too many concussions. His comments were disrespectful and badly timed. They also served to put a spotlight on Warner’s own debatable induction into the HOF. Kurt Warner is borderline. Eli, by contrast, is already on his way to getting fitted for his yellow jacket and he’s only 31 years old. The guy played like a BEAST all year long. He had the regular season stats along with an unbelievable post season. Don’t know WTF Warner is talking about.

  3. Lars Hanson says:

I can sense there is a major bit of fanism with the Eli Manning topic. It’s good to back your team, especially when they just won a Super Bowl. But there’s tunnel vision. Basically what Kurt said is he doesn’t consider Eli a HOF and that should he keep it up he will be.

True analyst would show that Warner is dead on. Besides the fact that Manning had to have “his team” and wouldn’t play for the Chargers even before he took a snap is ridiculous. The debate about Eli even being elite is a 50-50 split, having him be a HOF is even more of a stretch.

Right now Eli isn’t an HOF, he’s questionably the best QB in the division. The part about saying Warner is jealous makes no sense. Warner did it with 2 different teams and the accolades and scenario Warner had compared to Manning isn’t even close. Also, Warner was signed to a 2-year deal to mentor Manning into the starting job. Getting to beyond the midway point in the season it was time for Eli to take over. He didn’t sign a major deal expecting to be the long-term starter. They didn’t draft just a rookie, they drafted him No.1 overall essentially.

“He is clearly jealous of the success and all of the Hall of Fame talk surrounding Eli after his brilliant performance in the Super Bowl, when he himself did not get as much after he retired.” I truly don’t think you know who Warner is as a person. He’s not the jealous type.

    • Jeff Shull says:

First of all…You have to understand you are in the MINORITY when you say Eli Manning is not an elite quarterback right????…you are also in the minority if you think Eli is not a FUTURE hall of Famer…Have you been watching TV at all? 50-50 split? No way it is even that close…maybe 80-20 with the 20 percent being haters who will never consider Eli elite.

You’re seriously going to tell me I have tunnel vision when you think a team that didn’t have a single receiver go over 800 yards doesn’t need help at the position?

Questionably the best QB in the division???….how can you seriously think that? Even the Eagles and Cowboys writers for this site said they believe Eli is a top 5 QB and better than both of their QBs…

What does him not wanting to play for the Chargers have anything to do with how he is playing now? Nothing.

The part about Warner being jealous makes perfect sense..he is an ultra competitive person, any person under that situation would feel a bit of resentment for being benched for a rookie when the team had a winning record…in my opinion that propelled the rest of his career with the Cardinals..he played with a chip on his shoulder..

I didn’t realize you and Warner were buddies and you know how he really feels..

The main point of the article is that Warner did not have to say what he said, but he was so ready to bring down Eli after he just won his second Super Bowl…He could have just said “Well maybe not right now, but in the future I can see Eli making the hall of fame.” But he didn’t, he brought up his career numbers, which doesn’t make any sense when Eli clearly turned a corner and has been playing so much better since 2008…he’s had three good seasons and one incredibly elite season…no reason to think his numbers won’t be Hall of Fame worthy when his career ends…

BTW..you obviously missed this part “While I agree with Warner to an extent, I certainly would not put Eli in Canton if his career ended tomorrow, but that still doesn’t mean we cannot start the discussion.”

Warner was being very transparent when he made these comments, he is clearly a little jealous of the attention being paid to Eli Manning and upset that he did not get the same Hall of Fame talk when he retired.
