Apparently still upset about the way Eli Manning spurned him in 2004, San Diego Chargers GM A.J. Smith chimed in on the Peyton sweepstakes, taking the opportunity to have a go at the Manning family.

Confronted with the possibility he could be facing Peyton Manning twice a year if he goes to the Denver Broncos (or Chiefs), Smith shrugged it off.

“I don’t know, and I really don’t care. I concentrate on the Chargers.”

Smith then backtracked before taking a deep shot to Archie’s gut.

“I do wish him the best in whatever the Manning family decides. I don’t know why you would ask me.  And I don’t know why anyone is asking Peyton.  If you really want to know what’s going on—what trips he’s making and where he’s going to play—call Archie.”

I love how Smith says “I don’t know why you would ask me” when not only is Peyton rumored to favor the Broncos, the Chargers’ rival, but the reporter was probably aiming to get that exact reaction out of him.

Still bitter that you got the short end of the stick, eh Smith? Eli Manning has two Super Bowls, how has Philip Rivers worked out?

That’s what I thought.
