The New York Giants and general manager Jerry Reese went hard to work looking for a tight end to help replace the losses of Jake Ballard and Travis Beckum in the Super Bowl.

Each tore their ACLs, meaning they will likely not be available this season, and even if they recover they won’t be the same until the 2013 season.

Reese signed Martellus Bennett, but only for a one-year deal. It is likely that Bennett would be brought back if he has a successful season, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Reese added another tight end early, especially if Coby Fleener falls to No. 32.

Fleener wowed everyone at his Pro Day and even possibly out shined the projected No. 1 overall pick in Andrew Luck. He ran a 4.45 40-yard dash and looked every bit as NFL ready as scouts have pegged him.

New York Giants tight end coach Mike Pope was in attendance.

Fleener has the benefit of having played in a pro-style offense at Stanford, couple that with his 6’6” frame and blazing speed and you have a guy who will be a terror for defensive coordinators.

Who says Mario Manningham has to be replaced by another wide receiver? Leave Bennett in for blocking duties and stick Fleener in the slot with Hakeem Nicks and Cruz working the outside. That sounds like a pretty potent attack if you ask me.

Here is what ESPN’s Mel Kiper had to say on Fleener.

The best tight end on the board, Fleener has the speed to be used off the line, where he can become a matchup problem and further diversify an already strong passing attack. Fleener has great hands, fantastic route-running ability and will become a big threat in the red zone. The Giants also need offensive line help, or could target a linebacker here, but Fleener fits.

The Giants would set themselves up with a play making tight end for the first time since Jeremy Shockey was traded in 2008.
