The New York Giants have had a situation at middle linebacker all off season long, one that most believed would be solved by the signing of either Jonathan Goff or Chase Blackburn, or by drafting a play maker early in the 2012 NFL Draft.

It appears that none of the above was the choice selected by Jerry Reese. Reports are indicating that the Giants and Cincinnati Bengals are close to a trade involving Bengals linebacker Keith Rivers.

Rivers has played weak side linebacker his entire career, and it seems as if the Giants will slide Michael Boley to the middle spot.

According to Ralph Vacchiano of the NY Daily News, the Giants will give up their fifth round pick in the 2012 Draft. This is a small price to pay for a linebacker that is a monster when healthy.

I'm told the Giants will be giving the Bengals their 5th-round pick in the 2012 draft for LB Keith Rivers. #NYG

The Bengals made Rivers the ninth overall pick in the 2008 draft and was on the radar for rookie of the year that season. He was a huge part of the Bengals 2009 defense that helped them win the division, but he missed the entire 2011 season with a bad wrist injury.

Rivers was also part of a controversial hit from Pittsburgh Steelers WR Hines Ward, who blind sided him with a vicious hit and broke Rivers’ jaw in his rookie year.

This seems to be the end of the Giants career for Goff, who seemingly has no place among the starting three linebackers anymore. Rivers, Boley, and Kiwanuka are pretty set in stone, and it is highly unlikely Goff would accept a backup role.

Rivers came cheap due to his contract; he will be an unrestricted free agent after this season.
