One of the big stories coming out of New York Giants training camp has been the man impersonating defensive tackle Shaun Rogers, who also goes by the name Shaun Rogers. OK, so I’m being facetious, but seriously, where did the rest of Shaun Rogers go? The famously large run-stuffing defensive tackle has apparently lost a ton of weight over the offseason. Some say it could even be as much as 50 pounds.

The official roster lists him at 350, though he looks much less than that. It has caught the eye of several of his teammates.

“He is still big,” defensive captain Justin Tuck said. “He did a great job of getting to the weight coming into camp. That right there shows you his motivation. I think he lost almost 40, 50 pounds. I think it is somewhere around there. That is a huge show of motivation.”

With fellow tackle Chris Canty on the PUP list, having insurance like Rogers could be huge to start the season. Rogers’ addition could be big either way, considering they struggled against the run early on in 2011.

Rogers has not been the same player that dominated for the Detroit Lions, but maybe this dedication could help turn back the clock for at least one more season.

“I think he is going to be a guy that can definitely push the pocket where the quarterback can’t step up,” Tuck added. “And not only in the passing game, but that big body that won’t be moved on double-teams is going to help us solidify our run-stopping defense.”

Rogers thinks he can help a defensive line that is already loaded with talent.

“These guys are most definitely athletic and physical. I think I bring a little bit of size, and maybe in those short-yard situations, those run-scheme teams, I can hopefully bring a little beef and sturdiness in the middle. Hopefully, my size and knowledge of the game can play a little part.”
