Chris Cooley has been a steady tight end for many years for the Washington Redskins. Cooley had 849 receiving yards just two days ago. He is a very versatile player but is coming off of an injury plagued season last year. Should the New York Giants give him a look?
Martellus Bennett has impressed during camp at tight end and Henry Hynoski is a pretty good fullback. Cooley could be an upgrade over Bear Pascoe as the backup H-back/tight end position. I really expected the Redskins to keep him. He could have been an interesting security blanket for Robert Griffin III. Rookie quarterbacks need a reliable guy they can give the ball to in certain situations, which Cooley could have been.
I can’t see the Giants making this move though. It’s not because I think the New England Patriots are getting him, since they love collecting tight ends. It would be very Belichickian of the Giants to sign Cooley since he did play for a division rival.
If I were Jerry Reese, I would at least bring Cooley in for a look. He could be an intriguing option for Eli Manning out of the backfield or at tight end. I don’t think the Giants will, though, because they prefer to use in house options and they have a lot of those.
