Like every other NFL team, the New York Giants are faced with major decisions when trying to slim down their roster to the required 53 players.  However, I don’t think anyone expected the Giants to cut some of the players they did.

Running back Danny Ware announced via Twitter that he has been among those that will not make the final roster.  Ware was expected to be at least the third running back entering the regular season.  However, a lackluster preseason cost him job as the Giants decided to go with Andre Brown and Da’Rel Scott.  I don’t think anyone expected Ware to be the odd one out at running back when training camp started.

Also among the cuts were linebacker Greg Jones, last season’s sixth-round draft pick.  Jones appeared in every game as a rookie last season and, because of injuries, was forced to start in five of them.  He played well but looked overmatched at times in coverage.

Another shock was the release of this season’s sixth-round pick Matt McCants.  McCants looked overmatched at tackle at times this preseason but the Giants knew he was a raw prospect when they drafted him.

Wide receivers David Douglas, Isaiah Stanback, and Dan DePalma didn’t make the team.  Douglas showed some flashes this preseason and there are rumors going around that the Dallas Cowboys, among other teams, might be interested in the undrafted rookie from Arizona.  Stanback had a brutal preseason, especially on special teams.  In weeks 3 and 4 of the preseason he had 15-yard penalties that really put him in the doghouse.  DePalma was a fan favorite, and a favorite among the players, for his work ethic.

Other cuts for the Giants so far include defensive linemen Dwayne Hendricks, Matt Broha, Marcus Thomas, Craig Marshall, linebacker Jake Muasau, tight end Larry Donnell, and offensive lineman Selvish Capers.  Broha and Donnell will most likely be on the practice squad if they clear waivers.

The Giants also placed safety Tyler Sash on the reserve/suspended list.  He will miss the first four games of the season after his appeal was denied for using a banned substance.  Cornerback Bruce Johnson was also placed on injured reserve because of his shoulder joining Terrell Thomas who is still rehabbing his ACL.  Defensive tackle Shaun Rogers was also placed on injured reserve.  The Giants have until Tuesday to designate one of them eligible to come off in Week 8.

For those keeping score, here is a list of the players the Giants have cut so far today:

WRs Dan DePalma, David Douglas, and Isaiah Stanback

TE Larry Donnell

DL Matt Broha, Marcus Thomas, Craig Marshall, Dwayne Hendricks

LBs Greg Jones, and Jake Muasau
