After being blown away by the speed of the Oakland Raiders last week, the New York Jets have added former Buffalo Bills linebacker Aaron Maybin to the active roster in time for their Week 4 game against the Baltimore Ravens.

The 23-year-old Maybin was the 11th overall pick of the 2009 NFL draft, but was a bust in Buffalo, recording just 24 total tackles and zero sacks in two seasons with the Bills.

After seeing his playing time disappear by the end of last season, Maybin was cut loose. He signed with the Jets this August and made an immediate impact in the preseason.

Albeit undersized for his position, the speedy, athletic outside linebacker adds a much needed dimension to the suddenly slumping Jets defense that got bullied by the Raiders last Sunday.

Maybin, a former Penn State Nittany Lion and the cousin of San Diego Padres outfielder Cameron Maybin, is by far the fastest linebacker the Jets have, and he may be able to get some pressure on the quarterback with his patented speed rush technique.

Designated pass rusher Jamaal Westerman has been a disappointment so far this season in an increased role on defense, so the move to re-sign Maybin makes a lot of sense.

According to Manish Mehta of the Daily News, who broke the story Wednesday morning, the Jets felt comfortable letting Maybin go prior to the season opener because they felt he was more of a luxury than a vital part of their defense.

However, they also reportedly indicated to Maybin that they would try to bring him back if an opportunity presented itself.

The Jets placed offensive lineman Robert Turner on injured reserve after he broke his leg in the preseason opener to open up a roster spot for Maybin. The Jets obviously felt comfortable with the performance of rookie center Colin Baxter in his place.

Aaron Maybin may have been a bust in Buffalo, but for the New York Jets he’s a much-needed reinforcement. Look for Maybin to be in uniform as early as this week against the Ravens.

Rex Ryan tends to get the most out of his players, and Maybin will be the latest experiment. If the Jets can get something out of him as a designated pass rusher, they might have themselves a very useful piece going forward.
