New York Jets Hire Dave DeGuglielmo from the Miami Dolphins as New Offensive Line Coach

Jody Gomez-US PRESSWIRE

The New York Jets have hired a new offensive line coach after the departure of Bill Callahan to the Dallas Cowboys, hiring former Miami Dolphins offensive line coach Dave DeGuglielmo to the same position.

DeGuglielmo spent the last three seasons working under new Jets offensive coordinator Tony Sparano when he was the head man in Miami, and he did a pretty good job over there.

The Dolphins running game gained 1,987 yards in 2011, and the offensive line propelled Reggie Bush’s to his first career 1,000-yard season.

Prior to his stint in Miami, DeGuglielmo was an assistant offensive line coach with the New York Giants from 2004 to 2008. In 2008, the Giants set a franchise record with an NFL-best 2,518 rushing yards and 5.0 yards per carry.

The Jets sent three of their offensive linemen to the Pro Bowl in 2011, despite a down year overall as unit compared to their elite status the two years prior.

Hopefully, Sparano and DeGuglielmo will help get that unit back on track in 2012. Success on offense starts and ends with the offensive line, especially when a team has young skill position players like the Jets do.

If the Jets can stabilize their offensive line, and get back to a clock-controlling run-first offense, it will make life a lot easier for Mark Sanchez and company, and hopefully they’ll be much more efficient.

It does seem a little strange that the Jets have somewhat raided the Dolphins’ coaching staff, a team that hasn’t finished with a winning record over the last three seasons.

But I do like what these coaches have done with lesser talent than they’ll be working with in New York. They seem to have good track records and I think they’ll be successful here.
