In the wake of a disappointing 2011 season, the New York Jets have promised to make changes, and the upgrading of the coaching staff under head man Rex Ryan has been a top priority so far.

After totally revamping their offensive coaching staff with a new offensive coordinator and new offensive line coach among other things, it appears the Jets are now looking to make changes on defense as well.

Manish Mehta of the Daily News is reporting that the Jets are targeting veteran defensive line coach Karl Dunbar, who was recently let go by the Minnesota Vikings after a six-year stint over there.

From 2006-2008, Minnesota’s run defense led the league three straight seasons under Dunbar’s tutelage, led by the “Williams Wall” of defensive tackles Pat and Kevin Williams up the middle.

The 44-year-old Dunbar played in the NFL as well, including two seasons with the Arizona Cardinals in 1994 & 1995, with Rex Ryan’s father Buddy his head coach. Rex was also an assistant on those teams.

Dunbar is expected to accept an offer to join the Jets as defensive line coach this week, after the Vikings fired him earlier this month. Current Jets DL coach Mark Carrier likely would be reassigned to another position.

He’s got a pretty impressive résumé, and it’ll be great to see what Dunbar can do with the young talent the Jets have on their defensive line. This could be a really shrewd hire for the Jets if it happens. Let’s hope it gets done.
