The New York Jets did it again.  They forced me to take my attention away from the diamond and devote it to the action taking place on the gridiron – this is particularly impressive as there isn’t any actual gridiron action taking place.  However, some teams and players in sports just have a knack for grabbing headlines.  The New York Jets are one of those teams and Tim Tebow is one of those players.  What else did we expect when news broke of the New York Jets acquiring Tim Tebow via trade?

It is evident that most of the “experts” do not understand nor like this move from the Jets’ perspective or Tebow’s.  I guess I am in the minority then – as far as the Jets are concerned at least.  I’m confident that Mark Sanchez will maintain the starting  quarterback and I’m not as worried about his psyche as others are.  If Sanchez can’t hold off Tebow and/or folds under the extra pressure, he wasn’t going to take this team to the top anyway.  Tebow is far from the best pure quarterback that could compete for a starting job with Sanchez, but the attention devoted to this situation should ensure that No. 6 comes to camp with his i’s dotted and his t’s crossed.

In terms of Tebow’s role with the team, I feel like there are a lot of things you can do with him.  Starting quarterback is still not one of the roles that I’m including, but I think he’ll give everything he has regardless of what position he’s playing.  He seems to understand that the Jets want him to serve as sort of a wildcat specialist – for lack of a more endearing term – and I don’t think there is anything wrong with that either.  Even though the wildcat is pretty stale at this point, how many teams had a guy who could legitimately throw the football? The completion percentage may be sub-50%, but teams still have to respect the threat of Tebow’s arm more so than any of the other running backs/wide receivers used in wildcat packages over the past four years.

This alone won’t be nearly enough to get Gang Green back to the AFC Championship game.  There is still a lot of work that needs to be done in the trenches and I’d love to see a good wide receiver added to the roster.  This time next year though, I think we’re going to look back on the New York Jets’ acquisition of Tim Tebow and realize that it was a pretty good move.
