In November of 2011 Greg Childs, a star wide receiver for the Arkansas Razorbacks, suffered a  patella tendon injury. He returned to the team as soon as he could after surgery and continued to play in 2011. The post-surgery Childs hadn’t fully recovered and his performance was poor in 2011 compared to before the injury.

Childs was a star in 2010, and according to Matt Waldman, who is a leading draft expert, the wide receiver was being compared to the late Chris Henry, Andre Johnson, and Randy Moss in terms of skill set. Somehow many have forgotten all about that due to his play in 2011.  Fortunately for Childs he showed significant signs of recovery with a vertical leap of 40.5″, a 4.41 second 40 yard dash, and ran the 3-cone drill in 6.73 seconds at his Pro Day.

At 6’3″ and 219 pounds Childs has the frame of an elite wide receiver. He’s a great blocker, has excellent catching ability, and, as Waldman demonstrated in the cited post,  the wide receiver is a very good route runner. It’s important to note that the New York Jets need a wide receiver and there’s no quality fit worthy of a first round pick.

So the Jets should take a hard look at Childs and consider drafting him in rounds three to five. He could feasibly end up being the steal of the draft, that one guy that 31 teams doubted and one team made a bet on, which resulted in huge dividends. If the Jets do draft Childs I believe they will be walking away with a definite starter and a player who could end up being their number one wide receiver in a year’s time.
