When the New York Knicks claimed Steve Novak off waivers from the San Antonio Spurs last season, they had no idea that they would be landing themselves a player that would lead the NBA in 3-point shooting at 47.2 percent.
Novak came to the Knicks last season at a bargain salary of $992,680, and despite being a one-dimensional sharpshooter, the two sides have agreed to a four-year, $15 million deal, according to Novak’s agent, Mark Bartelstein. The Knicks are allowed to exceed their salary cap due to an arbitrator ruling last week that declared the Knicks have Novak’s early Bird-rights.
At 29 years old, the Knicks are taking a gamble that Novak will be able to continue his success beyond the arc, but after losing Landry Fields to the Toronto Raptors, the Knicks felt they needed to make this move to keep one of their role players.
Now that the Knicks have Novak’s contract settled, they can shift their attention toward matching Jeremy Lin’s offer sheet with the Houston Rockets and they can try to figure out a sign-and-trade deal either with the Dallas Mavericks for Jason Kidd or the Rockets for Marcus Camby.
The Knicks are also reportedly interested in resigning J.R. Smith and Jared Jeffries and if the Knicks are able to complete all of these moves, they would have a solid bench next season as they try to improve upon their seventh seed in the playoffs this past season where the Miami Heat knocked them out of the first round with a 4-1 series victory.
