Knicks Add Brewer to Improve Defense
With Iman Shumpert coming off of knee surgery and expected to be out until at least January, the New York Knicks knew they needed to add depth at the shooting guard position.
The only healthy shooting guard that was on the Knicks’ roster was J.R. Smith. Landry Fields won’t be back after agreeing to a three-year, $20 million contract offer with the Toronto Raptors that the Knicks refused to match.
After agreeing to a one-year $1.4 million contract with Ronnie Brewer, the Knicks can officially check off another weakness. Brewer is a player that is solid defensively, something that the Knicks desperately needed.
Brewer is going to be the player the Knicks rely on to shut down the opposing team’s top shooting guard. He helped the Chicago Bulls become the best defensive team last season.
Offensively, the Knicks know better than to expect too much from Brewer. He averaged just 6.9 points and 2.1 assists with a .275 three-point shooting percentage in 24.8 minutes per game in the regular season.
Brewer saw some time as a starter last season after Richard Hamilton became hampered by an injury, but Kyle Korver eventually took over as Brewer began to struggle offensively. In the postseason, Brewer had his role reduced to just 16.6 minutes per game and he averaged 1.6 points and 1.8 assists per game which is probably why his price tag was so cheap for the Knicks.
Luckily, for the Knicks, they were able to resign J.R. Smith to a two-year deal. Smith is an offensive minded three-point shooter that averaged 12.5 points and 2.4 assists with a .347 three-point shooting percentage last season.
