Carlos Beltran Sweepstakes Could Be Three Team Race
The New York Mets’ Carlos Beltran is arguably the biggest name on the trade market this year and the tornado of rumors will continue to swirl until he is moved. By now, many of us are well aware of Carlos Beltran’s desire to stay in the National League and the contract clause that won’t allow a team to receive draft pick compensation if/when he leaves via free agency this fall. When the smoke clears, it may be Carlos Beltran’s full no-trade clause that turns out to be the most critical component of a deadline deal. Peter Gammons believes that Carlos Beltran will hand pick his new team based on which one has the best shot at winning a ring. According to Gammons, this means the Atlanta Braves, San Francisco Giants and Philadelphia Phillies are leading the pack in the Carlos Beltran sweepstakes.
I would be fine with a trade to any one of that trio of teams. I would prefer that the Mets receive pitching over position players. The Braves and Phillies have the most minor league pitching, but the Giants possess some of their own prime pieces. The Mets are currently setting high prices for Beltran by asking for players like Mike Minor, Domonic Brown and Zack Wheeler but that could just be textbook negotiating. It actually works in the Mets favor if it becomes common perception that Beltran will only accept a trade to those three contending teams. At that point it will be those three teams bidding against each other for Beltran knowing that he could be the difference that puts them over the top and into the World Series.
