I love it when the guys that cover baseball for a living hop onto my bandwagon.  Maybe that’s taking things a bit too far because I’m sure I didn’t get the bandwagon moving in this case, but I’m going to give myself a little pat on the back anyway.  Its been well documented that the New York Mets need to/are going to address their bullpen this offseason.  With a couple of big names hitting the market, it was suggested that the New York Mets could consider making a big splash on a Jonathan Papelbon or a Ryan Madson.  The former is moot as he signed a deal with the Philadelphia Phillies.  The latter would simply be foolish.  There is no sense in the New York Mets spending big money on a closer when they’re going to be rebuilding for a year or two.  That is why Andy Martino and I think the New York Mets should look at guys like Jonathan Broxton and Joe Nathan.  He also looks at Brad Lidge in his article as he discusses what the trio are looking for out of their careers in the short and long(er) term.  Based on some of the quotes that Martino cites, Jonathan Broxton seems the most willing to accept a set-up role as he tries to build his value back up.  Joe Nathan, on the other hand, seems like he’s got his heart set on a closing gig in the early going.  Brad Lidge was somewhere in between.  A couple of quotes is far from enough to place significant stock into, but it was just interesting to get a little early indication as to what each pitcher is looking for in his next job.  It might be a little while before the New York Mets actually address their bullpen needs, but it should be an interesting development to keep track of.  Stay tuned.
